A new Disability Champion, Dr Alanya Drummond, has been appointed following Dr Kristoffer Greaves’ decision to step down from the role.
The Division of Equity Diversity & Inclusion has announced Dr Alanya Drummond has replaced Dr Kristoffer Greaves as UNSW’s Disability Champion.
“We are sorry to see Kris go, but he is very involved in a demanding new program in Law for which he is responsible, and he felt unable to give the Champion role the attention it deserved,” said Eileen Baldry, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Equity Diversity & Inclusion. “We are truly grateful for his time as Disability Champion, and for his expertise and leadership. We are delighted Alanya has agreed to take on the role.”
Dr Drummond, a member of the Disability Champions Working Group, has been appointed as Dr Greaves’ successor and will assume the role immediately.
Dr Drummond is a UNSW alumna and lecturer in the Interior Architecture program in Built Environment. She has been integral in the training of the faculty's sessional staff and is part of the team hosting the Sessional Staff Community of Practice.
Dr Drummond is a member of the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee in Bulit Environment, where she is developing a peer-to-peer support resource called BE Inclusive. As the Faculty’s Academic Disability Advisor, she supports students with disability to achieve an equitable educational experience.
“I will support those experiencing disability related to physical or mental ill-health in higher education,” Dr Drummond said. “With lived experience of clinical anxiety, I will work to increase recognition of the breadth of circumstances that disable people, and how to manage common trigger situations in the classroom.
“I hope to develop further peer-to-peer resources on how to behave inclusively on campus and boost the availability of RUOK practices to embed within our teaching and learning. I am especially passionate about ensuring our community is equipped with the communication tools to confidently ask for help in challenging times.”
Dr Drummond is also involved in local government and is a current elected Councillor for North Sydney Council. Here she is working to implement the municipality’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan.
