Join us in shaping UNSW’s approach to gendered violence prevention and response.
UNSW is committed to addressing all forms of gendered violence and prioritising the wellbeing of students and staff impacted, whether the incident is related to UNSW or not.
The University’s draft Gendered Violence Policy is now available for comment until Tuesday 11 June 2024. A consultation note shares information about the policy development process and policy content.
Built on six guiding principles, the draft policy aims to inform procedures, decisions and actions in relation to gendered violence at UNSW. It focuses on wellbeing and support to ensure students and staff affected by gendered violence can continue their studies or employment, beyond making a complaint.
Why are we using the term ‘gendered violence’?
Gendered violence encompasses harmful acts based on gender, rooted in inequality and harmful norms. Examples include domestic and family violence, dating violence, sexual harassment and gendered harassment of LGBTIQ+ students and staff.
Our shift to focus on gendered violence aligns with national strategies and reflects community needs expressed during the development of the Stop. Empower. Support. UNSW Gendered Violence Strategy and Action Plan 2022–2025.
The draft policy encompasses all acts of gendered violence and is not limited to sexual misconduct.
What’s covered in the policy and what’s not?
The draft policy covers principles for response and prevention efforts, including education and training, and outlines investigative responses. It adopts a trauma-informed approach, with a focus on safety, choice, empowerment and confidentiality.
Detailed procedures and processes will be available on the gendered violence website, including information on seeking support, reporting gendered violence, how the University will respond to reports, and more.
Who contributed to the development of the policy?
The Gendered Violence Research Network led policy development, with input from staff, students, and various committees and councils at UNSW.
