Academic Success Monitor awarded top prize in the Higher Education Innovation in Admin Systems category.
Academic Success Monitor (ASM), a UNSW strategic initiative that helps identify and support students who might be at risk of going off-track in their studies, won this award amongst a record number of submissions.
The Gartner awards highlight new and imaginative applications of technology to solve real-world problems, attracting submissions from education institutions across the globe showcasing how they use technology to drive best-in-class initiatives.
Many struggling students are identified only after they fail a class. Interventions and additional support could increase student success, but these additional efforts can be time-consuming for teachers. Academic Success Monitor addresses these challenges by using predictive analytics powered by machine learning analysis of digital engagement to identify at-risk students.
These predictions inform personalised AI-generated messages and support suggestions for students. Academics are also provided with class engagement metrics and notifications for effective and timely interventions, and UNSW support teams are appraised of high-risk cases early enough in the term to make a positive difference.
The judging panel shared the following comments about why UNSW won this award.
“The project not only enables real-time, comprehensive analysis of student engagement and risk but also goes beyond traditional methods by employing predictive analytics and generative AI to proactively address issues before they escalate.”
“This proactive, personalised approach significantly enhances student support, setting a new standard in the education sector.”
“The use of generative artificial intelligence to provide personalised messaging to students is a differentiator from what has been done in the past to identify students at risk.”
Congratulations to Professor Simon McIntyre PFHEA, Director Educational Innovation, and the PVCE Innovation Team behind the project for this recognition.
