Join the UNSW Scientia Education Lecture and hear about learnings from Vertically Integrated Projects program, where students participate in major industry-based research projects.
On Thursday 3 April, UNSW Scientia Education Academy will host Professor Sami Kara and Associate Professor Lauren Kark who will co-present the lecture ‘Bridging Education, Innovation & Social Impact through Vertically Integrated Projects’. Professor Kari will share learnings from implementing the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program at UNSW since its launch in 2018. He’ll also discuss how the program aims to tackle societal challenges by uniting education, research, innovation, design and entrepreneurship.
Professor Kara, from UNSW Engineering, is the creator and Director of the VIP program and his research focus is sustainable manufacturing and life cycle engineering. A/Professor Kark, from the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and Deputy Head of School (Academic), is the academic lead on the VIP project ‘Assistive Tech Hub’.
About the VIP program
The VIP program seeks to increase the number of undergraduates and students completing a coursework Master program who will progress to a Master degree by research and PhD studies. Students are encouraged to participate in major research projects led by UNSW’s outstanding researchers and educators.
The program also has key educational outcomes, providing time and context to learn and practise professional skills within large multidisciplinary teams in industry-based research projects.
It aims to develop experiences, cultivate leadership and provide mentoring for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Each project focuses on a challenge that directly addresses one or more UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UNSW’s newly released strategy sets out to deliver Education that has Societal Impact at its heart, and to scale and incorporate interdisciplinary ‘Societal Impact Projects’ in all undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This talk will be a fantastic opportunity to hear from educational leaders who have first-hand experience in making it happen.
