Complete a short course to learn about the structural barriers that can impact educational outcomes for our students.
UNSW is committed to having an undergraduate community that reflects the broader Australian population. We are working to enable access, participation and graduate success for students who are underrepresented in higher education.
Our Gateway Equity Target (GET) sets out that, by 2027, 25 per cent of commencing domestic undergraduate students will be from a low socioeconomic background and/or have experienced educational disadvantage (attended a Gateway partner school).
Understanding Student Equity at UNSW online course
The new online course for staff – Understanding Student Equity at UNSW – will build your understanding of the GET, widening participation in higher education more broadly, and how we are working to transform the undergraduate student community at UNSW. You’ll hear directly from students who have entered UNSW through the Gateway Admission Pathway and will gain useful insights into their experience.
By completing the course, you will learn about:
- what UNSW’s GET is and the key initiatives that support its progress
- the importance of creating access pathways to university for students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, such as the Gateway Admission Pathway and Program
- the current demographics and academic profile of the Gateway cohort
- how the Gateway cohort represents a diverse group of students, with each student bringing unique knowledge and experiences to UNSW
- the strengths that students from underrepresented backgrounds, and having a diverse student body, bring to the UNSW community.
Mary Teague, Director of Access, Equity and Inclusion said: “The Gateway Equity Target is a holistic and University-wide commitment. These learning modules are a useful resource for staff to expand their understanding of equity cohorts, learn about the experiences of current students, and what constitutes inclusive and exclusive cultures.
“The modules are an accessible way to gain an understanding of the strategic intent and goal of the GET and provide insights into the experiences of students at our University that are immediate, personal and powerful. These stories will change the way you think about student equity and the importance of creating an inclusive learning environment.”
Duration: Three self-paced modules, which will take around 45 minutes to complete in total.
Who can enrol: The course is open to all staff.
How to enrol: You will need to enter an enrolment key to access the modules. To request this, please email access_equity_inclusion@unsw.edu.au with the subject line: “Understanding Student Equity at UNSW – Staff Enrolment”.
The Understanding Student Equity at UNSW modules are designed and managed by the Access, Equity and Inclusion team. If you have any questions about the course, please email access_equity_inclusion@unsw.edu.au.
UNSW’s Gateway Equity Target
Programs across UNSW to support reaching the GET recognise that educational opportunities are heavily linked to socio-educational advantage and socio-economic status, with the two often interrelated, and that UNSW must actively seek to ameliorate these barriers.
Based on current pre-census enrolment data, we are on track to meet the target and have made substantial progress on last year’s result. There has been a five per cent increase since 2023 in enrolments by students from low socioeconomic backgrounds or who have experienced educational disadvantage (subject to change in line with fluctuations to the domestic undergraduate commencing student enrolments).
