UNSW Sydney, Arc and City of Sydney Council team up to improve food security.
On Tuesday 4 March Food Hub Paddington officially opened on the UNSW School of Art & Design Paddington campus. Located in the courtyard, the free food pantry initiative provides support to UNSW students, staff and the local community.
A generous grant from the City of Sydney Council made this initiative possible and reflects our shared commitment to improving societal impact and the way universities can be linked to advancing public good.
Professor Attila Brungs, Vice-Chancellor and President, attended the launch and shared the history behind the Food Hub.
“The Food Hub has seen incredible growth and become an essential resource for students, which is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the amazing volunteers at Arc, who now distribute more than 1000 meals a week!
“I’m excited to see this program expand to support students at our Paddington Campus, providing free, nutritious food to students and residents in the Darlinghurst area. The initiative highlights the impact of collaboration, with our students, University and local council working together to create positive change for the community.”
The Food Hub will provide crucial assistance to vulnerable and food-insecure populations in Sydney and create a sustainable response to food waste in the city.
Uncle Michael West from Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council highlighted the importance of food as a social gathering.
“Thank you to UNSW and Arc for providing this service to the community,” he said. “The Food Hub will be a place to have a yarn, connect with Country and support physical, social and spiritual nourishment.”
