The successful program has been recognised for its dedication to supporting international students in NSW.
The UNSW Water Safety Program commenced in 2018 with a pilot learn-to-swim initiative. It has evolved into a water safety education model that includes a beach safety walk, beach safety program and a grant scheme.
“This comprehensive program is testament to our commitment to improving water safety for international students,” said Madhav Raman, Engagement Officer UNSW Health Promotion Unit.
“It’s not just about saving lives, it offers an important avenue for international students to engage with the Australian community to build social licence, gain employment and improve their health and wellbeing.
“We are so proud to be recognised and to win this prestigious award in the Education Provider category.”
Since it began, more than 1700 students from more than 50 countries have participated. In the last year alone, more than 1100 students participated in the water safety program.
The program’s collaborative approach with local surf clubs and community organisations fosters inclusivity, enhances students’ wellbeing and empowers them through crucial water safety skills and employment opportunities.
The first step of the UNSW Water Safety Program is the Coogee to Bondi walk, a highly engaging social event that features a workshop by Surf Life Saving NSW. The second step of the program focuses on teaching foundational swimming skills through a dedicated eight week learn-to-swim program.
Following surveys and discussions with international students, a significant gap between learning to swim in a pool compared to swimming at a beach was identified. The Beach Ocean Safe Program was then developed which offers a three-day immersive educational experience teaching students how to navigate waves, identify rip currents and perform first aid and CPR.
This year, the Swimming Safe Grant was launched which provides six months of free learn-to-swim lessons while enabling students to volunteer with UNSW, the University gym and pool, local surf clubs and Surf Life Saving NSW.
