Encourage commencing students to complete the new mandatory online course introducing library skills, academic integrity and responsible behaviours, including preventing gendered violence.

We are excited to launch Student Essentials, a new online Moodle course which is replacing the current ELISE Moodle course in Term 3 2024.

Like ELISE, Student Essentials is mandatory for all commencing undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students and must be completed within the first three weeks of their studies.

What’s involved?

Complete with helpful scenarios, links and resources, Student Essentials consists of three interactive modules designed to arm students with the knowledge and understanding they need to start their journey at UNSW. The modules are:

  • Library Skills
  • Academic Integrity
  • Responsible Behaviours and Preventing Gendered Violence.

The course should take about 1 hour to complete, or 20 minutes per module.

Why is it important?

Student Essentials will provide students with the necessary fundamental information to support their academic success and navigate their student journey, while also informing them of our mutual obligations.

We have a responsibility to ensure all students are familiar with UNSW’s policies, including the new Code of Conduct and Values and new Gendered Violence Policy, as well as the various resources and supports available to them. It’s also crucial that students have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities as new members of the UNSW student community.

How long do students have to complete it?

Students must complete the Student Essentials course by Friday of Week 3 of their first term, semester or hexamester of study.

As with the former ELISE course, students who don’t complete the course within the required timeframe will receive a block on their student record, preventing them from enrolling in or withdrawing from courses for the following term, semester or hexamester. The block can be easily lifted once the student completes the course. This process is tried and tested and shouldn’t pose a challenge for most of our students.

What’s next?

All commencing coursework students will be notified of their requirements as part of their onboarding. They’ll also receive reminders to complete the course in the lead-up to the deadline.

Please promote Student Essentials to your students and encourage them to complete it within the timeframe.

If your students experience any challenges completing the course, they can reach out to the The Nucleus: Student Hub. Students experiencing technical difficulties can contact UNSW IT directly.

Thank you for your support as we launch this exciting new initiative.
