Join us from Monday 16 to Friday 27 September for UNSW’s annual sexual health and relationships festival.

SEXtember is an opportunity to break down taboos around sex and sexuality, promote healthy relationships and encourage sex-positive conversations in the University community.

The two-week festival is co-created with students and staff to celebrate respectful relationships, intimacy and good sex.

SEXtember has been recognised for its positive impact at UNSW. In 2023, it was described as a best-practice example of gender-based violence prevention by Universities Australia. This year, UNSW is partnering with the University of Queensland, and the University of Sydney to bring events to a broader community.

As part of the events, festivities and discussions around sex and pleasure, SEXtember 2024 draws attention to healthy relationships and explores themes related to gendered violence, bystander intervention and consent.

Events and activities this SEXtember

Join the celebration of intimacy, sex and healthy relationships from 16 to 27 September 2024. There’s something for everyone.

Check out The Living Poetry Project, a collaboration between UNSW’s Music Performance Unit, Health Promotion Unit and Media and Immersive Technology team. Following a call-out for students to share their experience of dating and relationships through poetry and music, four students wrote a composition to share with you during SEXtember.

An installation showing their work will be on display on the Helen Maguire Lawn throughout the festival. A digital exhibition of the work is available online.

Sign up for a staff Bystander Workshop on Thursday 26 September from 10.30am to 12.30pm to gain skills to help you safely intervene when situations don’t feel right.

Register for a live webinar with Mataio Faafetai (Matt) Brown from She Is Not Your Rehab on Tuesday 24 September from 12 pm – 1 pm. Matt will discuss the power of mental health and addressing childhood trauma in helping to prevent cycles of gendered violence.

Participate in Hump Day on Wednesday 25 September from 10am to 4pm. We’ll bring together community and health experts on the Helen Maguire Lawn for a day of festivities. There’ll be opportunities to meet staff from ACON, take part in group fitness sessions with UNSW Fitness & Aquatic centre staff, get an STI check, and view The Living Poetry Project and What Were You Wearing (WWYW) exhibitions, plus much more.

Watch students in conversation about consent with Chanel Contos, founder of Teach us Consent. We’ll also share moreconsent conversations featuring UNSW athletes and members of the UNSW community on the Consent Matters web page in the coming months.
