The University is among five national institutions ranked in the world’s top 100.
UNSW ranked 77th globally and fourth in Australia in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released on 15 August. In 2024, ARWU assessed more than 2500 institutions and published the results for the top 1000 universities. Australia has 31 universities in ARWU’s top 1000, 24 in the top 500 and five in the top 100.
This year marked a modest drop in UNSW’s overall ranking despite improvements across research performance indicators, including the number of highly cited researchers, papers published in journals Nature and Science, and papers indexed in major citation indices, highlighting the fiercely competitive nature of the global higher education landscape.
“Although UNSW declined to 77 from 72 last year, our overall score has grown nearly 1.5%, driven by improved performance across the board in research output and citation metrics,” said Pro Vice-Chancellor Research Professor Dane McCamey.
Universities from the United States continue to lead the league table, with Harvard University ranking first for the 22nd year. Chinese mainland universities further improved their position in the top 1000, with 203 compared to 183 universities in the United States. The United States maintains the lead in the top 100 where it holds 38 places, significantly ahead of mainland China (13), the United Kingdom (8) and Australia (5).
