A new tool has been created to empower Education Focussed Academics, academics and tutors.
The Inclusive Teaching Guide launched this month, giving academic staff a practical tool to support them in the design of inclusive curriculum, assessment, and teaching and learning approaches in the classroom. The guide is the teaching-focused counterpart to the student-facing Uni Ready toolkit, which many academics have already embedded into their first-year units of study.
The resources are free, open-source and available to everyone to use. They have been created to support the increasing number of students from underrepresented backgrounds enrolling at UNSW as part of the Gateway Equity Target.
The resource development was funded by the NSW Department of Education, via a strategic collaboration grant. The creation of the guide was led by Access, Equity and Inclusion within the Division of Societal Impact, Equity & Engagement, in partnership with the PVC-Education Innovation at the University of Sydney, and the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre at the University of Newcastle. The quick, go-to guide provides a rich cross-institutional approach to inclusive teaching strategies.
About the Inclusive Teaching Guide
The Inclusive Teaching Guide offers principles and practical strategies to help teachers enhance their practices, enrich first-year student learning, and ensure all students, particularly those underrepresented in higher education, feel valued and supported.
Divided into four key sections — Understanding Diversity, Building an Inclusive Environment, Principles of Inclusive Teaching, and Inclusive Teaching in Action — the guide provides a comprehensive approach through text, video and audio clips.
The guide features 14 practical examples suitable for small and large groups. These examples illustrate inclusive teaching principles and address various aspects such as getting to know your students, supporting academic reading, guiding research report writing, providing feedback, integrating AI into the classroom, and more, to support belonging and academic capability.
