DeepSeek technologies and services will no longer be accessible on UNSW networks or from UNSW devices.
At UNSW, we continue to explore secure and ethical ways to leverage the potential of AI, while we also work on responding to external developments and changes related to new AI technologies. We put the safety of UNSW staff and UNSW data first and foremost in all we do. Therefore, building on previous advice and recommendations of the federal government regarding data security concerns associated with the use of DeepSeek, we are progressing activities to further restrict the use of DeepSeek at UNSW.
DeepSeek technologies and services will no longer be accessible on UNSW networks or from UNSW devices. UNSW data should not be put into DeepSeek under any circumstances.
Researchers may need to access DeepSeek technology for specific, research-related activities. Requests for exemptions should be directed to the Office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research & Enterprise and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Appropriate and ethical use of AI
We also want to remind you of our previous communications about the appropriate and ethical use of AI at UNSW. Always:
- approach emerging technologies with a healthy dose of scepticism
- use only UNSW-approved AI tools and never input UNSW data into unapproved AI tools
- stay informed, be cautious, and keep your personal security and UNSW’s data at the forefront of your decision-making, even when running AI models locally.
If in doubt, please contact UNSW IT for advice or visit Guide to AI @ UNSW.
