A handy guide for everything you need to know about social media in 2025.

With 2025 already proving to be a turbulent year for many reasons, social media is often at the centre of global discourse.

The social media team has put together their views on the year ahead, as well as the latest tips to help you create great content.

The social media landscape is changing, so making decisions about joining emerging platforms should be done carefully as they will likely not all succeed.

"We encourage academics to experiment with new social platforms that their communities might be moving to, just don't bite off more than you can chew,” said Jack Breen, Social Media Manager.

“If you're keen to create new personal accounts, that's great, but I suggest trying just one new one (e.g. Threads or Blusky), otherwise it will become too onerous and you're less likely to be effective across all."

Top tips to ensure your content performs in 2025

  • Create for social first, don’t retrofit from other work. Effective content starts with the audience. Think about what will capture their attention, spark their curiosity or add value.
  • Create vertical content (not landscape) for social. Almost all social platforms are prioritising tall images now.
  • Create vertical videos of 30-90 seconds. If the primary purpose of your video is for social, then it needs to be shot vertically. Keep it to between 30-90 seconds, the sweet spot for audiences.
