Improve biodiversity at the Kensington campus while boosting your mental health at the next Urban Growers garden bee.
Founded in 2019 by the UNSW Urban Growers group, the Barker Street car park Teaching and Learning Community Food Garden provides opportunities for hands-on practical learning, experiential teaching across disciplines, and restorative community action. From a barren concrete patch, it now boasts 10 flourishing raised beds, fruit trees, medicinal herbs and a vibrant jasmine climber, transforming our car park into a green oasis. Greenspaces like this one on our campus, offer us the chance to relax in nature on campus and reconnect with where our food comes from.
The garden has been used as a teaching space to deliver food literacy. Students from the Dietetics & Food Innovation program in the Faculty of Medicine & Health grow food and learn how food production impacts the environment, people and food security. The garden has also welcomed students from a local high school who learnt about seed saving.
Join our Winter Garden Bee

As winter progresses, we're calling for new volunteers to join our upcoming Winter Garden Bee on Wednesday 31 July from 3 – 4 pm at the north-east corner of the Barker Street car park.
Whether you're a gardening novice or enthusiast, this session promises hands-on learning in bed preparation, seed saving and weeding. It also offers the opportunity to network and join the garden committee.
